Both of tonight’s Pharkin' good bands are adventurous jam/rock bands that are not afraid to experiment and get their hands dirty from time to time, laying out solid grooves and exploratory solos. Tonight’s show is part of Volume One’s mini Go Green! fair – booths and displays from local green businesses. Check it out.

Greetings! Get thee to the nearest publick establishment and pick up a copy of the new issue of Volume One. It's got our first-ever Green Means Go special section, all about sustainable living in the Chippewa Valley. To go along with the section, we'll be hosting a Green Fair at this Thursday's concert (Little Willie + Ultimate Frisbee Orchestra) in Phoenix Park with booths from local green businesses. The green section is also the debut of our awesome new special projects editor, Trevor Kupfer. (Everybody say hi.) Awesome old special projects editor/Rear End columnist Mike Paulus is now the online editor, responsible for things like the mysterious countdown above.
But there's more! Like Eau Claire's own hip-hop group Frozen Tundra; the newly opened Metropolis Hotel near Action City and Florian Gardens; 15-year-old novelist Cayla Kluver's nationally distributed novel Legacy; V1 intern Claire Jeffries on her family juggling troupe; a UW-Eau Claire local foods study (take the survey here); and an apparition of the Virgin Mary in Eau Claire fireworks.
Oh, and Chalkfest. Did we mention Chalkfest?

We've got less than two weeks before Chalkfest explodes across downtown Eau Claire's picturesque Wilson Park. It's part of Summerfest, and it's gonna rock the local chalk scene right off its chalkboard, man. Check out the the Chalkfest schedule for a list of the day's activities, especially the "Night-Light Reception" at 8:30pm.

Persepolis presents a deeply personal coming-of-age tale about finding one’s place in the world. Based on her bestselling graphic novel, Marjane Satrapi teamed up with underground comic book artist Vincent Paronnaud to co-direct this animated big screen adaptation. The result is an electrifying, heartfelt, and original portrait of a spunky girl who surmounts countless obstacles to grow into a wise young adult. Marjane is an innocent nine-year-old living in Iran. When her uncle is killed in the Iran/Iraq war, her parents send her to school in Austria, where she can study in safety. The only trouble is that her Middle Eastern appearance frightens people. But Marjane’s fiery spirit doesn’t succumb to any of the negativity. Eventually, she returns home to Iran to be with her family. But even though she settles into married life, the tyrannical pressures of Iranian society force her to abandon her country once again, sending her to France on another journey.
