Here's that video clip of Bon Iver (local guy Justin Vernon) on the "David Letterman of England's" big TV show. Specifically, this is Later... with Jools Holland from May 16. So, pretty big deal, right there.

Hey! With our summer concert series winding back into action, we can once again start calling Phoenix Park “The Phark.” Yep, good times. Tonight at the Phark, Yam Cannon – shown here hanging out in some sort of grain storage facility – will emerge from the cave in which they dwell to rock your socks off with alternating shots of jam and hard rock. Both Yam Cannon and Max Power are Eau Claire-based, hot, up-and-coming jam rock bands that lay out some killer grooves and melodies. Enjoy.
Sounds Like Summer: Yam Cannon + Max Power and the Feedback • Thursday, June 12 • Phoenix Park amphitheater in Downtown Eau Claire • 6:30pm • all ages • FREE • 552-0457
Check out the sponsors: RCU, Downtown Eau Claire Inc., Hillside Dental, the Wisconsin Arts Board, Chilson Subaru, and the Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau.

She's An Invisible Ship by I, Torrent | I, Torrent is a local (Eau Clairian) band that kicks out bass heavy, albini-induced rockers. They've played a couple of shows around here, most notably opening for Alan Sparhawk's band du jour, The Retribution Gospel Choir. These guys are all seasoned vets of the EC scene, and it is entirely visible in their live shows, which sound nearly as polished as their new EP.
The track, "She's An Invisible Ship" stands out in my mind as a testament to what heavy music done right can be. Sean Lau's vocals growl through the whole sh-bang of chorusy guitars and ultra low bass. I'm still not sure who she is, but evidently she's one helluva sinkin' ship. Look for the highlight of the song at the 1:51 mark, which is as good as anything I've heard in the past couple of months. Read more and listen to the track.

So Volume One is tackling a new festival this summer, and we're pretty excited about it. Imagine a small park overtaken by a day-long firestorm of creativity and positive community energy, culminating in yards and yards of sidewalk space displaying chalk artwork in a way the Eau Claire community has never seen. Can you imagine that? That’s Chalkfest. It's set to take place on Saturday, August 9 at downtown Eau Claire's Wilson Park (during the Summerfest celebration), but right now we're focused on signing up the area's best artists to participate in this first annual festival. If you know any, spread the word to make sure they get a chance to participate!
FOR ARTISTS: This is a chance to let your artwork sprawl across the sidewalks of beautiful Wilson Park as thousands of spectators watch and appreciate. That night, V1 will host an amazing evening reception with music and awards – cash prizes will be awarded for audience favorites. Supplies will be provided with registration. Space is limited, so register early.
Visit www.chalkfest.org or call Volume One at 715-552-0457 to get signed up.

Not content, as many of you are, to simply wear his Volume One T-shirt to the grocery store, Laundromat, drive-in movie theatre, and other such mundane locales, Tim Wolter got ambitious and wore his snazzy T on a quick trip to Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland (northern England). Tim reports …
.
.
The “scene” in Northumberland is as follows:
Inhabitants: Uniformly friendly. Roughly a 3:1 sheep to human ratio.
Entertainment: Not much. Pubs have Quiz Nights, which is kind of like the Millionaire show with Guiness but without the millions.
Drink: An earthly paradise. Ales, Lagers, Ciders. Most local and all superb.
Food: Darn near anything can be called “Pudding.” Quality ranges from serviceable, starchy junk food to the genuine horror of haggis with “nips and tatters.”
Thanks, Tim! (Click the pic for a biggie.)
