Show Us Your V1: Hadrian's Wall, Northern England

Showus_nengland Not content, as many of you are, to simply wear his Volume One T-shirt to the grocery store, Laundromat, drive-in movie theatre, and other such mundane locales, Tim Wolter got ambitious and wore his snazzy T on a quick trip to Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland (northern England).  Tim reports …

.

.

The “scene” in Northumberland is as follows:

Inhabitants: Uniformly friendly. Roughly a 3:1 sheep to human ratio.
Entertainment: Not much. Pubs have Quiz Nights, which is kind of like the Millionaire show with Guiness but without the millions.
Drink: An earthly paradise. Ales, Lagers, Ciders. Most local and all superb.
Food: Darn near anything can be called “Pudding.” Quality ranges from serviceable, starchy junk food to the genuine horror of haggis with “nips and tatters.”

Thanks, Tim! (Click the pic for a biggie.)

Show Us Your V1: Boston Common

Bostoncommon

Greetings from Boston! Managing editor Karline (that's me) has been on vacation in Boston for the past week in a half. I've been visiting family and museums like crazy with my significant other, who snapped the pic above.

I also saw the following in a Macy's window and thought of dear old V1:

Show Us Your V1: MEGA POST!

So, one of our terrific photographers emailed me some “Show Us” pics from a recent trip to Portland, Oregon, and it reminded me that I’ve been sitting on a whole hoard of “Show Us” pictures. So I’m just gonna throw ’em all up here for your viewing pleasure. First up is a shot from Steph Birr, taken in Downtown Portland. Steph says, “This one is me with what appears to be the Silver Surfer after he burnt out and has to perform on the streets.” Thanks, Steph!

Show Us Your V1: Puppy Dog

V1doggie

If you can get over the dazzling Photoshopped background, you’ll see a doggie (lab?) named Stella wearing a V1 shirt, contemplating the Jan. 17 issue. We’re not sure if this is the best endorsement, since she put the shirt on backwards. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, that one, despite her taste in reading material. The anonymous owner says …

Thinking she was home alone, we caught Stella checking out Volume One. She can't keep her paws off it!

Thanks, whoever you are!

Show Us Your V1: Minn. Sushi Joint

Giapponese1

Henry Chan, the owner of Eau Claire’s Shanghai Bistro, sent us a few pics of V1 at his new “Japanese-Italian fusion” restaurant Giapponese – over in Woodbury, Minnesota. Apparently, Volume One elicits a range of emotional responses from sushi chefs, from completely sincere thoughtfulness all the way to totally authentic surprise.

Cool Symposium Monday

Showusmexico

This just in! Looking for an enlightening way to spend your afternoon today? Well, check this out!

UW-Eau Claire will hold a student research symposium called “Mexico, Migration and Wisconsin” from 3-8pm on Monday, Dec. 10 in Phillips Science Hall and the Davies Theatre in Davies Center. Nathan Wolf Lustbader, the Mexican consul in St. Paul, Minn. will give the keynote address for the event – which is free and open to the public – at 6pm in Davies Theatre. This marks the first time the Mexican consul will visit Eau Claire.

The symposium is based on field research conducted by 13 students in a geography capstone class taught by Dr. Paul Kaldjian, associate professor of geography, and run in cooperation with the university's Spanish and Latin American studies programs. Kaldjian said the goals of the course are to inform migration discussions in Wisconsin, educate the public, help make this region more welcoming to migrant workers and assist local communities in both Wisconsin and Veracruz, Mexico.

Call 952-846-8788 for more info. But hurry. The press info we got included the amazing photo you see above, with this description:

"A photo of Dr. Paul Kaldjian sharing the local news and customs from our Chippewa Valley. This Señor makes the finest of mutton soups!"
