It's happening. Monday, July 7 at 7pm. At least three of us will be there, I think. Nothing formal, just meeting up to chat and drink and knit.

Just to get you in the mood, here's a mellow little video of Pasadena, California's 2007 Chalk Fest. As part of this year's SummerFest in downtown Eau Claire, Volume One's hosting a similar event down in Wison Park. Check out the details here.

Check out this little Jim Pullman fan's handiwork upon one of Eau Claire's fine pedestrian walkways. (Click the pic for a biggie. Also here and here). The chalk don't lie – the Jim Pullman Band takes the stage labyrinth on Thursday night down in the Phark – a rock and roll trio playing a mix of melodic, guitar-driven originals and well-selected cover tunes. Joining them will be local female-fronted rockers Myrna Loy.
Bonus: If you leave a comment listing the street on which this artwork is located, you win free tickets to Thursday's concert!!
Sounds Like Summer: Jim Pullman Band + Myrna Loy • Thursday, July 3 • Phoenix Park amphitheater in Downtown Eau Claire • 6:30pm • all ages • FREE • 552-0457
Check out the sponsors: RCU, Clear Channel, Downtown Eau Claire Inc., Hillside Dental, the Wisconsin Arts Board, Chilson Subaru, and the Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Say hi to the new issue of V1. This issue features our first-ever "Where the Jobs Are" section, with information about the state of the local job market, local leaders' incentives to bring jobs here, trends and predictions for the future, and tips on finding a job. Happy employment.
This issue also takes a look at the discussion that's been going on in Eau Claire for, oh, decades about the city's need for a convention center, arena, performing arts facility, and/or other large gathering venue. Furthermore, you'll find articles about a Downsville couple that bought what is probably Wisconsin's last remaining octagonal schoolhouse and has lots of arty/community-building plans for it; an area man running for president; the world's first privately funded solar car; kids-of-all-ages musician Magic Mama; the still-uncertain future of the Eau Claire Children's Theatre's new home; Luther Midelfort's super-impressive art collection; and community supported agriculture happening around here.

Congressman Ron Kind (D-La Crosse) spoke at the downtown bus transfer center in Eau Claire on Monday, expressing his support for mass transit as an alternative to high gas prices. Transit riders asked about federal funding for a new bus transfer center for downtown Eau Claire, because the current structure was built in 1985 and was meant to be temporary. Other riders urged the Congressman and city officials there that more routes and additional service, such as Sunday service, are crucial for them to get to work. Congressman Kind said that a bill recently passed in the House (HB 6052 - "Saving Energy Through Public Transportation" Act) could bring an additional $1.7 billion in grants to transit systems nationwide, but city officials admitted that if any of that money reached Eau Claire it would go toward maintaining current Eau Claire Transit operations.
At one point in his speech, Congressman Kind employed visual aids flawlessly.
